Hallway Painting Services in Bath

Entrance Hall Painting

The entrance hall is the first impression of a home and one of the hardest-wearing spaces in the house. Scuffs, marks, and wear on walls and woodwork concentrate here more than anywhere else.

We use durable finishes throughout. These clean more easily and last longer than standard emulsion on high-contact surfaces.

In Bath’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces, entrance halls typically have original tiled floors, dado rails, and panelled doors. We mask the tiles and any features that are not being painted to protect finished surfaces and reduce cleaning time.

For period hallways with cornicing or original coving, we follow the same preparation approach used across all interior painting projects. Filling and sanding before priming gives the cleanest possible result.

Hallway Woodwork and Joinery

Hallway woodwork takes a significant amount of daily contact. Door frames, skirting boards, and handrails show wear faster than walls. We apply a hard-wearing satin or eggshell finish to all timber in hallways.

This provides a washable surface that holds up to regular use.

Where original timber is painted over many layers, we assess whether stripping back is worthwhile before applying new paint. In most cases, thorough keying and an appropriate primer achieves a sound finish without stripping. We advise on this during the site visit.

Architraves and door frames require careful cutting in at the junction with the wall. We take time here to keep the edge clean and consistent throughout.

Multi-Storey Hallway and Stairwell

Multi-storey hallways in Bath’s Georgian townhouses present access and sequencing challenges. On Sion Hill and elsewhere in Lansdown, a full-height hallway may span four floors. The staircase must remain passable at all times during the project.

We work top to bottom on multi-storey hallways. This prevents wet paint on lower sections being disturbed by work on upper levels. We also agree a daily phasing plan with the client so the staircase is always accessible by the end of each working day.

See our staircase painting page for more on how we manage stairwell access on tall properties. High ceilings require appropriate access equipment, included in the quote.

High-Traffic Finishes for Hallways

Hallways need paint that can handle regular cleaning. A flat matt emulsion shows marks and cannot be wiped without affecting the surface. We recommend mid-sheen or eggshell finishes for hallway walls.

These offer a washable surface without the reflectivity of a full gloss.

On ceiling painting in hallways, a flat white finish remains the standard. Hallway ceilings are rarely touched and do not need the durability of wall finishes.

Where a client prefers a heritage finish, we advise on breathable emulsions suited to lime plaster walls. These allow the surface to manage moisture without trapping it.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Visit and Access Planning

We visit and assess the hallway and staircase. We note the number of floors, ceiling height, surface condition, and any period features. For multi-storey properties, we plan the phasing so the staircase stays accessible throughout.

2. Surface Preparation

Walls and ceilings are cleaned and checked. Cracks, patches, and uneven areas are filled and sanded. Period features such as dado rails and cornicing are inspected and masked before any paint is applied.

3. Masking

Floors, skirting, and architraves are masked. Tiled floors and original joinery are protected throughout. Nothing that is not being painted gets paint on it.

4. Paint Application

We work top to bottom, preventing wet paint on lower sections being disturbed by work above. Two finish coats are standard on walls and ceilings. Woodwork gets an undercoat and a topcoat in the appropriate sheen level.

5. Inspection and Completion

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are done before we leave. We walk through the finished hallway with you before closing the job.

Hallway Painting Costs in Bath

What Affects the Price

Hallway painting costs depend primarily on the number of floors, the extent of period features, and whether woodwork is included alongside the walls. Prices below cover materials and labour on sound, painted surfaces.

Typical range: £350–2,900 depending on size and floors.

Number of Floors

A four-storey hallway covering ground floor to top landing is a substantial project. Each floor adds time for preparation, masking, and application.

Period features such as cornicing, picture rails, dado rails, and original panelling all add cutting-in and masking time. These features are common in Bath’s Georgian and Edwardian stock.

Typical Prices for Bath Hallways

Single-storey hall (Victorian terrace): £350–550. Two-storey hallway (Edwardian semi): £600–950.

Multi-storey hall and stairwell (Georgian townhouse, Lansdown): £1,900–2,900. A full hallway and stairwell in a four-storey Georgian townhouse on Sion Hill costs between £1,900 and £2,900.

Call 01225 234445 for a fixed price based on your specific hallway.
