Exterior Painting Services in Bath

Painting Bath Stone

Bath stone needs breathable coatings. Standard masonry paint seals the surface and traps moisture — on stone, that leads to paint failure and spalling.

We use breathable systems, lime-based or mineral-based, that let the stone cycle moisture naturally. We treat biological growth, consolidate eroded areas, and specify the right primer and paint system for each property.

Rendered Exteriors

Rendered facades are common across Bath’s Victorian and Edwardian streets, including Larkhall, Bear Flat, and Oldfield Park.

Before painting, we check for structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections. Loose render is hacked back and replastered. Cracks are filled with flexible exterior filler. Only then do we apply primer and finish.

Windows and Woodwork

Timber sash windows, fascias, soffits, and front doors — prepared properly and finished to last.

Many sash windows in Bath are original Georgian or Regency joinery. We strip back to sound timber and patch any rot. We prime correctly and apply durable exterior gloss or satin. Painted sashes are checked to slide freely when we leave.

uPVC and Composite Surfaces

uPVC windows, doors, and guttering can be painted with the right primer and preparation.

We use specialist plastic primers that bond to the surface before the finish coat goes on. Suitable where replacement is not practical. We advise on expected lifespan before starting.

Garden Walls and Outbuildings

Stone boundary walls, gate piers, and outbuildings need the same care as the main house.

Many are Bath stone or rubble stone, particularly in Combe Down and the larger Lansdown properties. The same breathable approach applies. We assess and specify accordingly.

All Exterior Surfaces

We also cover masonry painting, wood painting, window frame painting, and door painting.

We also handle front door painting, fence painting, deck painting, and shed painting. Call 01225 234445 to discuss any exterior surface.

Garage Door Painting

Garage door painting on up-and-over, sectional, and side-hinged garage doors requires proper surface preparation and a durable finish. We strip back failing paint, treat any rust or bare metal, and apply an exterior-grade finish that holds colour and resists weathering.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Assessment

We visit and check every surface — surface type, existing coating, render condition, and biological growth. We identify any structural repairs needed before painting starts.

2. Surface Preparation

We clean moss, algae, and loose material. Render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated with a fungicidal solution and allowed to dwell before rinsing.

3. Priming

Bath stone gets a breathable mineral primer. Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Masonry gets an appropriate masonry primer. The right primer for each surface makes all the difference.

4. Paint Application

Exterior paint needs a dry window of 48 to 72 hours to cure. We monitor Bath’s weather forecasts and plan application phases around them. Two finish coats are standard — high-exposure surfaces get a third.

5. Inspection and Touch-Up

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are done before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

What Does Exterior Painting Cost?

Exterior painting typically costs between £20 and £45 per square metre, including preparation and two finish coats. Total project costs usually fall between £1,500 and £6,000+.

Every property is different. Call 01225 234445 for a precise quote based on your property.

What Drives the Price

Surface area is the biggest factor — a three-storey Georgian townhouse has considerably more wall area than a Victorian semi, and access requirements increase with height.

Surface condition also matters: poor render needs repair before painting, and timber in poor condition needs stripping. Paint system choice affects cost too — breathable mineral or lime-based systems cost more per litre than standard masonry paint.

Typical Price Ranges

Victorian semi (Bear Flat or Oldfield Park, rendered walls): £1,800 to £3,000 for walls only, plus £500 to £900 for fascias, soffits, and windows.

Georgian terrace (Bathwick or Widcombe, Bath stone): £3,000 to £6,000 depending on condition. Full exterior with woodwork (3-bed Victorian, windows and doors included): £2,500 to £4,500. See our house painting page for interior work at the same time.

A Note on Bath Stone

Bath stone properties need breathable paint systems — not standard masonry paint. Budget 20 to 40 percent higher than you would for an equivalent rendered property.

The longer service life of breathable systems justifies the difference. We specify the right product on site after assessing the stone.
