Door Painters in Bath

Door painting blue front door in Bath by Bath Decorators, professional painters and decorators

Bath Decorators are experienced door painters covering Bath and its surrounding neighbourhoods. We cover the Georgian crescents of Bathwick and Lansdown, the stone cottages of Combe Down and Batheaston, and the Victorian terraces of Larkhall, Bear Flat, and Oldfield Park.

  • Internal and external door painting for all property types
  • Panel door preparation including stripping around moulded profiles
  • Smooth, consistent finish on flat and raised-panel doors
  • Door frames, linings, and architraves finished as part of the same job
  • Period properties handled with care for original joinery and profile detail

Over ten years working on Bath’s Georgian and Regency properties means we understand the challenges of original timber joinery. Accumulated paint layers on panel edges and mouldings require proper preparation, not just a brush-over. We work carefully to restore crispness rather than bury it.

Door Painting Services in Bath

Internal Door Painting

Internal doors take more wear than most painted surfaces in a home. Edges, handles, and kick plates are touched constantly, and the finish needs to be hard-wearing and consistent across the full face of the door, including the top and bottom edges.

We use appropriate primers and hard-wearing topcoats for internal doors. Eggshell is the more popular modern choice for interior painting as it is easier to clean and shows less brush marking than traditional gloss.

Period Panel Door Preparation

Stone-built 18th and 19th century villas and cottages on Entry Hill and Bradford Road in Combe Down have original solid timber internal doors. Build-up on the panel edges and around the moulded profiles causes the crisp lines of the original joinery to become soft and indistinct.

A clean result requires careful abrading or chemical stripping around the panel moulds. Where chemical stripping is needed, we prime the bare timber before finishing — this adds time but produces a noticeably better result.

External Door Painting

External doors are exposed to rain, UV, and temperature changes throughout the year. A finish that holds up requires proper preparation — we apply a primer coat on any bare or worn areas, an undercoat, and a hard-wearing topcoat.

We paint external doors in gloss or exterior eggshell depending on the property type. Properties with front door painting requirements often need particular attention to the surrounding stonework and frame condition.

Door Frame and Architrave Work

Door frames, linings, and architraves are part of the same decorative scheme as the door itself. Painting the door without attending to the surrounding frame leaves the job looking incomplete. We include frames and architraves as a standard part of door painting work.

Where skirting boards and other woodwork is being done at the same time, such as window frame painting, we combine the work into a single visit and quote accordingly.

How Door Painting Works

1. Door Condition Assessment

We check paint build-up, panel condition, and frame state before quoting.

2. Preparation

Sanding, abrading, and stripping around panel moulds where the paint build-up requires it.

3. Primer Coat

Applied to any bare or newly stripped areas before the main finish coats.

4. Undercoat

Applied to the full door face and edges for a consistent base across the whole surface.

5. Topcoat and Final Inspection

Gloss or eggshell applied, edges and panel moulds checked, and the finished doors walked through with the client.

Door Painting Costs in Bath

Door painting costs depend on the door type, the condition of the existing surface, and the number of doors in the job. Every job is assessed individually and priced accordingly.

Door Type

A flat flush door requires less preparation time than a four or six-panel door with moulded profiles. Typical range: £90–140 for a flush door, £130–200 for a panel door.

Surface Condition

Heavy paint build-up that needs stripping around the panel moulds adds preparation time and cost. This is common on period properties in Combe Down, Bear Flat, and Larkhall.

Number of Doors

Multiple doors in a single visit reduce the per-door cost. A set of six panel doors in a period property typically ranges from £620–980 for the full job.
