Decking in Bath gardens is regularly exposed to damp air rising from the Avon valley. Moss, algae, and surface mould build up quickly, especially on north-facing or tree-shaded sections.

We start every job with a fungicidal wash applied to the full deck area. This is left to dwell, then rinsed off thoroughly. The timber must then dry completely before any coating is applied — skipping this step is the most common reason deck paint fails within a year.

Once the surface is clean and dry, we apply a preservative base or primer coat suited to the timber condition. Bare or stripped timber receives a penetrating preservative first. Previously treated decking that is still sound gets a light abrade and a direct topcoat.

Smooth painted decking becomes slippery when wet. This is a genuine hazard on steps, raised platforms, and areas around garden pools. We can apply an anti-slip additive to the topcoat, giving the surface a fine texture without significantly changing its appearance.

Anti-slip finishes are particularly useful for multi-level garden decks and for households with elderly residents or young children. The finish wears over time but can be refreshed as part of a standard maintenance repaint.

Most decks need a maintenance coat every two to three years, depending on aspect and tree cover. We assess whether the existing finish is sound enough to overcoat or whether it needs stripping back.
